Roughly 50 cars have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.
Cars, exterior walls and mailboxes were vandalized, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they stated in a statement.
Officers say they were notified late on Wednesday, when a resident observed that a automobile in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued substance.
The substance had been drawn in the form of a Nazi symbol, they added.
Police then discovered numerous other vandalized vehicles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
Swastikas are banned in Germany under laws banning the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials say early analysis show the liquid was likely human blood.
"At present there remains no clue as to its origin; authorities are presently not cognizant of any physical harm in association with the occurrence," they added.
Local authorities announced they were trying "to resolve the mystery" and have asked to the community for tips.
A senior official said the vandalism left him stunned and required to be resolved quickly.
"This act strikes at the core of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the far-right violent incident five years ago," he stated on social media, recalling the murder of nine victims by a gunman targeting residents of foreign heritage in five years prior.
