Micky van de Ven found the net on two occasions as Spurs extended their winning streak on the road in the Premier League and delivered the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having departed their historic home behind after more than a century at the conclusion of last season.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven pounced twice from set-pieces in the first half to put their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were failed to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - nodded in a third to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien believed he had equalized the tally a short while after the defender's opener, directing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

Beto, meanwhile, failed to convert a handful of opportunities, while Vicario made a series of fine stops to guarantee Tottenham went five away games unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the VAR stepped in, advising Craig Pawson to review the score on the screen and the referee ruled that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

The win elevates Thomas Frank's side up to third in the Premier League, five points off local foes and leaders the Gunners.

The Merseyside club remain 14th and are half a dozen points clear of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven excels in role at both ends of the field

Following a drab weekday display in the Champions League against the French side, where they mustered a mere attempts on target, the manager opted for Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The summer signing was unable to make much of an impact before being substituted for the substitute after an hour on the field, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the end.

Defender Van de Ven transformed into an attacking force to be feared.

Tottenham's first goal came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball back across the six-yard box for an free the defender to score.

And the captain - filling in as skipper in the Argentine's absence - notched his second in added time as he outjumped the England keeper to head home.

The Dutchman was equally impressive in defensive duties, combining well with Kevin Danso as the duo handled superbly with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Toffees missing finishing touch

The club's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the freshness may have faded somewhat and supporters headed to the gates after Sarr's final goal for Spurs.

The end in the team's winning streak at home will not be a major worry for David Moyes, but their striker situation are.

The forward and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of recognised strikers - had netted only one league goal combined before the weekend's match.

And they were failed to add to that poor tally on a wet and gloomy evening on in Liverpool.

Beto's form was epitomized when he opted to overhead kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, even with having room and time to reposition for a more conventional attempt that would have tested Vicario.

The substitute, as well, was unable to make an impact after replacing the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a lack of opportunity. The majority of Everton's attacks came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who tirelessly whipped dangerous balls into the Tottenham penalty area.
