Why Los Blancos Have 'Complete Faith' in Teenager Pitarch

Whenever a 18-year-old creates Real Madrid history in a pivotal Champions League tie against Manchester City, it naturally attracts acclaim and the spotlight.

In only his maiden start in the tournament - and fifth game for the club - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the fifteen-time European champions secured a 3-0 round of 16 first leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The young player, who also made his Real debut in the play-off round a few weeks prior with a cameo off the bench at Sporting Lisbon, then assisted the Madrid side defeat the English Premier League side in Tuesday's second leg to secure a quarter-final place.

Aged 18 years and 226 days, Pitarch was the club's youngest player to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing star Vinicius Jr's record by 10 days.

A Meteoric Rise Through La Fabrica

This talent is the most recent to emerge from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most promising young players.

He joined Real from Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico and Getafe's academies, and initially featuring for the Juvenil C team, where he rapidly created a strong impression.

He worked his way up to the reserve side and it was during a friendly match in which they faced the senior squad, then managed by Arbeloa, where the teenager is said to have drawn the eye of the present manager, who took over from Xabi Alonso in the new year.

Spanish media would later describe the moment as "an instant connection," adding he stood out not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, personality and drive he added to the team.

'His Best Attribute Is His Character'

In the summer of 2025, ex-manager Xabi Alonso called up Pitarch to train with the first team and awarded him minutes during pre-season.

Yet, it was Arbeloa's appointment that became the turning point in his career as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in both ties against the Portuguese side that set up the clash with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I have dreamed of this each night when sleeping, the very first time I began playing the game, each day you go to train and each day you have a game," stated the player following his first appearance.

"I've just fulfilled my ambition with the best team in the world and in the top tournament."

Handed a starting debut in the Spanish league against his former club - where he spent several seasons after arriving from Atletico in 2018 - he has retained his place for the following four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Dani Ceballos created an opening.

The teenager has seized it with displays that have defied his youth and experience.

"He is a very quick footballer, and you can observe his capabilities," said Arbeloa. "He is incredibly energetic, with great stamina, work-rate and mobility."

The player's mindset has also stood out to his manager.

"His greatest quality is his personality," continued he. "He always wants the ball, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.

"I realize people are astonished to watch him make his debut in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had complete trust in him to do his normal game.

"Thiago will keep receiving opportunities with the main squad. It is delightful to have a player like him."

A Future International Decision

Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Madrid region, and was raised deeply involved in Spanish football, moving through local academies before entering the club's renowned La Fabrica system.

He possesses dual Moroccan and Spanish nationality, giving him the option to represent both nations at senior international level.

Under international regulations, players may represent different countries at youth level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only binding once they appear in a official senior international match.

Pitarch has played for Spain at youth level, representing both the under-19 and U20 sides, and took part in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja reached the quarter-finals.

Nevertheless, he has yet to commit to any senior national team, who are watching his rise with interest.

In a recent interview, Pitarch said: "I haven't made my final decision so far. My situation is great with the Spanish federation, but I'll make a decision soon."

This scenario echoes that of other bi-national players such as club colleague Diaz and Barca star Yamal. While teenage Yamal chose Spain, Brahim decided to play for Morocco.

Eyes on the Prize

At present, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Real side and rewarding his manager's belief.

He played over an hour in the 2-1 victory at City, which sealed a 5-1 overall triumph and a quarter-final tie with Bayern Munich.

His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel to emphasise the coach's confidence in younger players to help the team chase trophies to come.

After his notable contributions to date on European football's biggest stage, Pitarch is tipped to play a key role in that.

"The manager treats me the identical way. We deal with it very normally. I try not to think about it too much - I must deserve my minutes on the pitch," he commented following the success at Etihad Stadium.
